The tropical depression expected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility on Thursday has intensified into a storm, the state weather bureau said yesterday.
“Noul” was last spotted 1,488 kilometers east of Surigao del Norte, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.
Shelly Ignacio, weather forecaster of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), said the storm with international name Noul was spotted at 1,570 kilometers east of Mindanao as of 4 p.m. yesterday.
Noul, which will be locally named Dodong once it enters the Philippines, packed winds of 75 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 90 kph.
It was forecast to move northwest at nine kph.
PAGASA is looking at two scenarios for Noul.
Ignacio said there is a probability that the storm would veer north or toward Southern Japan before it approaches landmass early next week.
However, she said there is also a chance that the storm will make landfall over Central or Southern Luzon.
“The possibility of the storm recurving or moving to the north is higher,” Ignacio told The STAR.
The state weather bureau said the storm is expected to dump moderate to heavy rains with gusty winds over the eastern section of the Visayas and the eastern side of Central and Southern Luzon when it passes near or just off the country’s eastern coast by Friday or Saturday.
“The whole country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rains or thunderstorms,” Pagasa said. CB
